By Robert Harrison, CHT, MNLP

This week on Wednesday Feb 8th, Dr. Oz will be doing another show on how to lose weight with Hypnosis. He’ll be talking with Paul McKenna again who is a Hypnotist and NLP Practitioner. Yet, in this show they’ll be exploring the hypnosis version of the ‘gastric bypass’ which simulates weight loss surgery using only hypnosis to convince the patient that they have actually had a gastric bypass to lose the weight…read on to hear my thoughts on this procedure.

So, what’s the deal with using Hypnosis to make the client’s subconscious mind ‘think’ they’ve undergone surgery? Is it effective? Does it work as well as traditional Hypnotherapy methods to help a person lose weight? Is there such a thing as a ‘traditional method’?

What is the Hypnosis version of the ‘Gastric Bypass’?

The basic concept is to convince the subconscious mind that the surgery has actually taken place when it didn’t. There are many versions of this out there, but the concept is the same. Often, the practitioners will play a cd with hospital sounds and smells to make the effect more real. They will then suggest that the surgery has taken place and that you’ll now be extremely full after a small amount of food. Is this a good idea? Studies show that caloric restriction fails 95% of the time after more than a year.

To those who have been in the business for more than a few years, the idea of convincing the mind that surgery has occurred is nothing new, but there are some concerns with Hypnosis. The most obvious concern is this. Why would you want to try and convince someone of something that isn’t true? What’s the long term effect of that?

Why would you need to lie to create good health?

If you try to convince yourself of something that you know isn’t true, do you really think it will stick long term? What are the odds of your unconscious overcoming that falsehood at some point? If you’re not sure, ask yourself this, “Do you still believe in Santa Clause?”

The answer is an obvious no. In the long run you are more likely to actually breed distrust for the purveyor of the information and it will become harder to make the changes you desire because your life experience doesn’t match what you’ve been told.

In addition, you actually re-reinforce the belief that weight loss is going to be difficult, that you can’t do it on your own, and that being fit and healthy isn’t within your reach easily without something like surgery.

The fact is, Hypnosis is a powerful tool and will work great for weight loss when done right – but the media will always be drawn to a good story. So let’s face it, fake ‘Hypno Surgery’, even if it works short term and backfires long term is a great story. It may for work some, but I believe there are more effective Hypnosis treatments available.

So what’s the ‘Best Practice’ solution?

After 10 years of working with up to 22 clients a day, teaching at the largest convention for Hypnotists and Hypnotherapists in the world, coaching Hypnotists all over the US, Canada, etc. I have seen some brilliant hypnotists get amazing results for weight loss. With each of them, the technique was NOT the specific that made the difference. A highly skilled hypnotist can get the job done with a variety of techniques. The KEY difference in these highly skilled hypnotists was their ability to customize and adjust the techniques on the fly for the client based on their individual needs and how they respond to each phase of the treatment.

Hypnosis for weight loss works amazingly well when done by a qualified practitioner who understands that 80% of the work is not the technique. 80% of creating lasting weight loss is learning to work with the client’s personality profile and a thorough and deep understanding of how they process information, cope with stress, and view themselves. This information provides the necessary blueprint to help get the client from fat to thin and keep them there.

In my years of experience I have come to believe that good health, healthy eating and exercising habits, and ideal weight are all goals worth pursuing and attaining. When you think about it correctly, it makes sense, and it is easy and enjoyable. Yet, most of us have been programmed by TV and advertising to desire food that is unhealthy and will destroy our health.

My promise to clients has always been that I will never try to convince them of something that isn’t already true. This is the foundation of trust and credibility.

The truth is, when you eat at the right times, the right foods, in the right amounts you feel amazing, your digestion is better, you sleep better, you have more energy, better mental focus, and you actually think happier thoughts.

What throws most of us off track is becoming addicted to man-made concoctions that make us sick and fat. Pretty much anything with enough sugar, fat, and salt mixed into it, what I call the ‘Evil Trifecta’ we’ll eat and keep on eating. But is it because we love it? It may seem so, but the answer is a lot more scientific than that. It’s because it throws our blood sugar off balance. Excessive fat and sugar together is a metabolic disaster waiting to happen. When our blood sugar get’s out of balance, our brains send a signal to our appetite center to eat MORE (in an attempt to re-stabilize blood sugar). This, in turn, causes us to eat more of the same food which causes our blood sugar to get more out of balance, etc. until we spiral out of control.

That’s where hypnosis comes in. Hypnosis can help you lose interest in these deadly foods and start craving healthy foods like fresh whole ripe fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and lean proteins.

Imagine being able to actually eliminate an un-healthy food from your diet? You already know it’s unhealthy and makes you feel terrible AFTER you eat it. So what if we could program you to experience that feeling BEFORE you eat it? Programming your mind to notice what food feels like after you eat it, but before you put it in your mouth will permanently shift your preferences because the truth is – healthy food feels good and unhealthy food feels bad.

As you lower the fat in your diet your energy level goes up, in direct proportion, assuming you are eating sufficient calories of nutrient dense foods (that already tastes amazing). When your energy levels rise you naturally crave and desire physical activity like a kid again.

Have you ever noticed that children don’t ever need motivation to play? That’s your natural state, so when you remove the sludge from your diet and the mental blocks from simply enjoying a fit and healthy life-style and having fun – you will lose the weight and keep it off…but not because you have to, BECAUSE YOU WANT TO.

A solid Hypnosis program for weight loss will help you to FEEL what food really does to your body in a deep and lasting way. It can program your mind to SEE the actual INGREDIENTS of what your are eating before you eat it. For example, when most people think of chocolate they see it as this entity on it’s own…this magical thing called ‘Chocolate’! What they don’t SEE and FEEL is that chocolate is 80% (on average) butter. That’s why chocolate melts like butter, has to be stored like butter, has the consistency of butter, because it is mostly butter. When their mouth is watering they aren’t imagining eating a huge chunk of butter. They don’t look at a box of See’s candies and see a box of chunks of butter. And how would they feel if, when they thought of eating chocolate, they actually vividly imagined eating that large chunk of butter? Would they still eat it? Probably not.

In our clinic we teach clients how to see & feel things for what they really are, not try and believe something they know isn’t true or doesn’t really exist. This supports them being far more successful long term because what they experience validates what they have been told and reinforces the change over time.

Good health and fitness is not something that we have to lie or coerce ourselves into doing. A comprehensive hypnosis weight loss program can help you change the habits and beliefs that have been getting in the way of you loving eating right and enjoying regular physical exercise naturally, and in a way you can really live with long term.

Use Hypnosis to gain mastery over your mind in a true way and reap the benefits for a life-time.

Walking in 6 months ago, I was afraid to allow myself to hope that hypnosis might work. Now, 45 lbs down and feeling great, I’m beginning to believe I can actually become “thin.” The new healthy habits I’ve formed feel so natural and sustainable. It feels that I genuinely prefer healthier foods and exercise. I get antsy if I can’t get the same level of activity in my day that I’ve become accustomed to. I never want to feel like I did six months ago again.

Celebrities and Leading Magazines Rave About Hypnosis and Self Hypnosis
By Michele Hailey

Oprah’s O magazine published the benefits of using hypnosis for weight loss. Good Housekeeping, Reader’s Digest, Sports Illustrated, Red Book, Psychology Today, Ladies Home Journal and many more magazines continue to publish the benefits of utilizing hypnosis for personal change. Once informed about hypnosis, you will know that it is safe, natural, and very effective.

Alot of people can relate to wanting something (exercise, diet, stop smoking, etc). Most are aware that eating healthier and physical activity are the key to weight reduction and a healthy lifestyle. Yet, they still don’t do it!

Although hypnosis can stimulate fat elimination, it does not make fat magically disappear. During a hypnosis session, suggestions are presented to the unconscious mind that direct behaviors to change, which in lead to the weight loss and motivation. Imagine feeling that unhealthy foods are undesirable and you actually want to work out and be physically active. As the hypnotic suggestions implant and take hold, the body reacts and moves the metabolism into high gear.

Fergie quit biting her nails, and stopped a meth addiction with hypnosis; Samuel Jackson and Matt Damon stopped smoking with hypnosis; Jane Pauly was hypnotized on her show and explained the benefits of hypnosis.

Also, there are thousands of ordinary people out there, who with hypnosis, are making huge amounts of money, losing weight, stopping smoking, reducing stress and more. They are continually improving their self and increasing their lifestyle by using self hypnosis. With Hypnosis you’ll succeed much faster in your endeavors than without it!

from Natural Life Magazine, September/October, 2007
Go Raw – Switch to a Raw Foods Diet
by Wendy Priesnitz

Food fads and trends come and go. But one that seems to be increasing in popularity is already thousands of years old. And that’s the raw food diet, which is defined as being based on eating unprocessed, organic, whole, vegan foods, at least 75 percent of which should be uncooked. A variety of techniques are used to prepare these foods, including sprouting seeds, grains and beans; soaking nuts and dried fruits; and blending and juicing fruits and vegetables. Dehydration is also used, because it doesn’t require much heat.

The growing number of adherents to what is sometimes called a “living foods diet” – which include celebrity devotees like Demi Moore, Bryan Adams and Woody Harrelson – believe that eating uncooked food prolongs youth and fights disease. The raw diet tends to be dense with nutrients that are easily absorbed into your blood, and contains little or no saturated fat. It is low in sodium, high in potassium and fiber. These factors are important in helping to reduce the risk of certain diseases such as heart disease and some cancers.

More importantly, temperatures above about 116 degrees F (46.6 C) destroy food’s natural enzymes, which facilitate digestion and keep our gut and arteries clean, thus boosting health and energy. How that happens is a bit controversial, with some scientists claiming that digestion depends on enzymes that the body generates and not on food enzymes. But fiber and antioxidants – of which fruits and vegetables are prime sources – influence that process. And the less cooked the fruit or vegetable is, the more antioxidants and fiber it retains.

We do know that cooking food denatures protein, which means that its molecular structure is modified, making it unusable or less usable by our bodies. When proteins are subjected to high heat during cooking, enzyme-resistant linkages are formed between the amino acid chains. The body cannot separate these amino acids and the indigestible, coagulated protein molecules become a source of toxicity.

Swiss research from the 1930s suggests that, when cooked food is ingested, the immune system sends armies of white blood cells to the digestive tract to fight what it perceives to be a threat. Absorption of un- or partially-digested proteins into the bloodstream can cause allergic reactions and toxicity of the immune system. This immune reaction is called Leukocytosis. In a nutshell, this process throws the body into shock, acting in self-defense by pumping out its own enzymes to digest the foreign substances that were ingested.

Scientists have continued to study cooked versus raw food diets. A Finnish study published in the journal Nutrition in 1992, for example, confirmed that raw vegan diets decrease toxic products in the colon. Results suggest that a raw food uncooked extreme vegan diet causes a decrease in bacterial enzymes and certain toxic products that have been implicated in colon cancer risk.

According to research performed by Dr. Bruce Ames, professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at University of California, Berkeley, various groups of chemicals from cooked food can cause tumors. For instance, nitrosamines are created from fish, poultry or meat cooked in gas ovens and barbecues, as nitrogen oxides within gas flames interact with fat residues; hetrocyclic amines form from heating proteins and amino acids; polycyclic hydrocarbons are created by charring meat.

Conversely, researchers have found that a diet rich in raw vegetables lowers your risk of breast cancer. Eating lots of fruit reduces your risk for colon cancer, according to a study published in 1998 in the journal Epidemiology. And including fresh fruit as part of your daily diet has been associated with fewer deaths from heart attacks and related problems, by as much as 24 percent, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal in 1996.

However, there is some research to indicate that some of the phytochemicals, such as lycopene in tomatoes and carotenoids in carrots, are more easily absorbed by the body when the vegetable has been cooked. So supplementation of those nutrients might be wise. It has also been suggested that a raw foods diet could be low in iron and calcium. But a study published in Archives of Internal Medicine found although bones were lighter on a raw diet, osteoporosis wasn’t a threat. The lower bone mass that researchers discovered in raw food eaters was apparently due to their being thinner than the general population, due to their reduced caloric intake.

The study was a small one, with researchers comparing the bone health of 18 people who had been following strict raw food diets for up to 10 years with that of people who ate a more typical American diet, including refined carbohydrates, animal products and cooked foods. The groups were matched according to age, sex and socioeconomic status. To gauge bone health, the researchers looked at each person’s body weight, bone weight and mineral density, markers of bone turnover, levels of vitamin D and inflammatory markers. The raw food vegetarians in the study had lower body weights and total body fat than the other volunteers. They also had lower bone mass and bone mineral density. But the people who followed raw food diets did not have any other biological markers that typically accompany osteoporosis and had normal rates of bone turnover.

Experts suggest switching slowly from a cooked to a raw diet because of the effects of detoxification that may be experienced. These can include headaches, nausea and mild depression.

One of the ways to learn how to convert to a raw foods diet, while preparing it in an engaging manner, is to take cues from the growing number of celebrity chefs who specialize in raw, vegan menus. And one of the chefs leading the movement toward gourmet raw foods is Chad Sarno, who was called “the king of uncooked and vegan cuisine” by GQ magazine. In his book Vital Creations, Sarno writes, “Twentieth century mainstream nutritional science has intricately analyzed, dissected and removed the vitality of raw food, which is undisturbed in nature. However, now it has become our responsibility to pick up the pieces to assemble a more complete picture of food in its natural state. For all its technological brilliance, modern science is cognitively stuck in a mind-set that is woefully inadequate to the task of synthesizing nutritional wholeness in a way that many of us would like. It has done more than just leave us on our own; it has led us down a path of nutritional error, falsehood, conspiracy and fraud. The fraud revolves around one idea: the loss of the truth that our food and the soil from which it grows is a living system. When you forget that food is alive, it can easily become conventional wisdom to cook, can, salt, skin, dilute, dissect, adulterate, and/or irradiate food into an enzymatically dead substance. This depleted food is the source of almost all dietary and health problems. It has become commonplace to drown crops chemically instead of growing or feeding the soil, which is the life of the plant.”

Here is a great article from my friend Adrian at www.nowloss.com. Check it out:

17 ways to curb cravings without natural appetite suppressants like Proactol or Hoodia

1. Eat more fiber

Fiber keeps you fuller longer and kills all your sugar cravings. Get fiber by eating fruits (especially apples) & vegetables, whole grains, nuts (almonds are the best) and seeds.

Eating Fiber will help you lose weight faster because it fills up your stomach quicker – for example…

You wouldn’t be able to eat 500 calories worth of carrots (or other foods high in fiber) because you’ll probably be full by the time you’ve eaten 200-300 calories worth of carrots so…

Fiber makes you fell full so you eat less and this means you’ll lose a lot more weight.
2. Eat more lean proteins

Researches are beginning to realize that the reason high protein diets like the Atkins work is because these diets reduce your appetite decreasing your food cravings making you eat less and lose more weight.

Lean proteins are one of the best foods to eat to get rid of sugar cravings since most sugar cravings come from not eating enough protein.
3.Drink whey protein

Whey protein helps you release appetite suppressing hormones that curb your cravings.

In a recent study… people drank either whey or casein and 90 minutes later they were allowed to eat freely at a buffet table. The people that drank whey protein ate significantly less calories.
4. Drink more WATER

Water makes you feel full by tricking your body into thinking it’s satisfied and…
5. You can drink a glass of vegetable juice before meals

Studies have shown that drinking vegetable juice before meals suppresses your appetite by making you eat 135 less calories at each meal.
6. Eat some fiber & protein and drink some water at ever meal to…

Regulate your blood sugar because… when your blood sugar is out of whack – You’ll crave for more food which means you’ll eat a lot more and gain more weight.

For example… If you eat some almonds & some fruit for fiber and then eat a lean meat like tuna or baked chicken for protein and if you wash all that down with 12 ounces of water… You’ll won’t have any food cravings for at least 4-6 hours.
7. Eat a small meal every 2-3 hours.

Doing this also regulates your blood sugar by giving you a constant supply of energy which really reduces your cravings and kills your big appetite and eating 5-6 smaller meals throughout the day makes you burn fat faster
8. Don’t skip breakfast

Skipping breakfast makes your already low morning blood sugar drop even more and this will cause you to have massive food cravings for the rest of the day.
9. Have an egg for breakfast

Studies found that an egg for breakfast helped overweight people feel more full over 24 hours than a bagel-based breakfast of equal calories and the people who ate the egg breakfast ate 330 calories less during the day.

10. Lose Belly Fat & have Less Cravings

According to researchers at University if Western Ontario – Belly fat makes you hungry because it makes a hormone called neuropeptide Y that makes you hungry.
11. Don’t get stressed out – relax more.

When you get stressed out you usually overeat because your body releases a hormone called Cortisol that makes you hungry.

If you have a hard time coping with stress – then a weight loss pill like Cortislim can help block Cortisol
12. Avoid refined or processed carbs (mainly sugar)

Refined carbs include heavily processed or high sugar foods like fluffy white breads/bread snacks, regular sodas, most breakfast cereal, sweets, candy, cookies and cakes.

Refined carbs cause your blood sugar levels to rise very fast and then crash very quickly making you crave for more sugar (refined carbs).

Doing numbers 1-4 & especially #5 will help reduce your cravings for refined carbs or sugar.
13. Limit your salt intake

Salt also makes your cravings worse and too much salt also causes you to gain unwanted water weight – See how to lose 5 pounds of unwanted water weight for more info
14. Take a whiff of Vanilla scent to curb cravings

The sweet smell of vanilla tricks you into thinking you already satisfied your cravings for sugars.
15. Eat on blue plates

It may sound weird but the research does show that blue is a natural appetite suppressant so try to use blue silverware, napkins, etc. whenever you eat and on the flip side…

Red, yellow, and orange have been shown to increase your appetite and make you eat more.
16. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep

Not getting enough Sleep makes your body release an appetite causing hormone called Ghrelin that makes you want to eat more so…

Try to get at least 7 hours of sleep so you can lower your Ghrelin levels and increase the levels of the fat burning & appetite suppressing hormone Leptin.
17. Wait out your cravings

Most cravings pass within 20 minutes because they’re often all in your head so you can survive these “fake cravings” by chewing on a some sugarless gum.
